Listening & Drawing Task: Friday Night in the Common Room

Assignment Overview

Purpose:
This task develops your ability to turn spoken information into a visual representation. You will listen to a description of a university students’ common room and draw the people, objects, and locations you hear. The activity focuses on listening for main ideas, specific details, spatial relationships, quantities, colors, and locations.

You will hear the audio twice. During both listenings, the audio will pause approximately every minute for 30–40 seconds so that you can add information to your drawing. Your goal is not to create a perfect picture. Your goal is to show what you understood from the audio.

Assignment type: Individual listening + pair comparison

Estimated time: 40 minutes

Learning Outcomes

By completing this task, you will be able to:

  • identify the general setting and situation in a spoken description;
  • listen selectively for important people, objects, places, and actions;
  • identify specific details such as colors, numbers, positions, and physical descriptions;
  • interpret spatial language such as left, right, above, below, beside, between, behind, in front of, closer to, and farther from;
  • organize spoken information visually through a drawing;
  • use repeated listening to confirm, correct, and add information;
  • compare your interpretation of an audio with that of another listener;
  • identify which details you understood confidently and which details require additional listening.

Task

Listen to the audio Friday Night in the Common Room and create a drawing that represents the scene being described.

The audio describes two university students, Leo and Maya, preparing a common room for an evening of movies, music, and video games.

As you listen, draw the room and gradually add:

  • furniture;
  • people;
  • objects;
  • their locations;
  • colors;
  • quantities;
  • important spatial relationships.

You do not need to write complete sentences while listening.

Instructions

Before Listening

  1. Take out a blank sheet of paper or open the drawing space provided by your teacher.
  2. Write the title Friday Night in the Common Room at the top.
  3. Prepare to listen for:
    • people;
    • furniture;
    • objects;
    • colors;
    • numbers;
    • locations;
    • spatial relationships.
  4. Remember that artistic quality is not being assessed.

First Listening: Build the Scene

Listen to the complete description.

The recording will stop for approximately 30–40 seconds every minute.

During each pause:

  1. Draw the new information you remember.
  2. Focus first on the main objects and their locations.
  3. Add labels if drawing an object is difficult.
  4. Place a ? beside any detail you are unsure about.
  5. Do not worry if you miss some information.

Your goal during the first listening is to create the general picture of the room.

Second Listening: Listen Like a Detective

Listen to the same audio again.

Do not start a new drawing.

Instead:

  1. Check the position of each object.
  2. Add missing objects.
  3. Correct anything that appears to be in the wrong location.
  4. Add details such as:
    • colors;
    • numbers;
    • clothing;
    • objects belonging to Leo or Maya;
    • objects above, below, beside, between, or behind other objects.
  5. Remove any ? when you become confident about the information.
  6. Add a new ? if you discover something you still need to verify.

Your goal during the second listening is to improve the accuracy and detail of your drawing.

Pair Comparison

When the second listening finishes, compare your drawing with a partner.

Do not immediately change your drawing.

First, discuss:

Three things you agree on

Three things that are different

For each difference, explain what you think you heard.

Useful language:

  • I heard that…
  • I think the ___ was beside the…
  • I put ___ here because I heard…
  • I am not sure about…
  • I thought he said…
  • During the second listening, I changed…

Final Check

When the reference image is shown, compare it with your drawing.

Identify:

  • one detail you understood correctly during the first listening;
  • one detail you added during the second listening;
  • one detail you misunderstood;
  • one difference that is only an artistic difference, not a listening error.

Success Criteria

Your work is successful if you:

  • identify the main setting correctly;
  • include the two main people;
  • include most of the important furniture and objects;
  • show generally accurate spatial relationships;
  • use information from the second listening to revise your drawing;
  • participate actively in the pair comparison;

Important

Your drawing does not have to look like the reference image.

The purpose of the task is to demonstrate what you understood from the audio, not your artistic ability.
