Assignment Overview

Purpose: Briefly explain what students will do, why they are doing it, and how the assignment connects to the current course, unit, or learning goals.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this assignment, students will be able to:

• Identify and analyze the discourse features most applicable to an assigned text using the 12-feature analytical framework.

• Support interpretations of discourse features with specific textual and contextual evidence.

• Evaluate and revise an independently completed discourse analysis using GenAI feedback as a critical-checking tool while maintaining ownership of the analysis.

Task

Complete the following task:

1. Find your text assignment in Text Assignments.xlsx and copy and paste your respective text to your own Word document.

2. Review Discourse Analysis_12 Features.pdf.

3. Analyze your text by identifying at least 8-10 discourse features that most apply to your text. Do not use AI.

• Once you have completed your analysis on your own, copy your assigned text, your analysis, and this self-check prompt to your LLM of choice (i.e., CoPilot, Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, etc.).

  Review my analysis of the assigned text using these 12 features: mode, spontaneity, planning, permanence, interactivity, lexical density, deixis, paralinguistic features, genre, communicative purpose, audience, and hybrid discourse.

  Do not analyze the text for me or add new analysis. Only check whether:

  1. I included the features that are most applicable to my text.

  2. My explanations of those features are accurate.

  3. My evidence from the text supports my claims.

  4. I may have misapplied, confused, or overlooked an important feature.

  Give brief feedback and questions that help me revise my own analysis. Do not provide the answers for me.

5. Copy and paste the GenAI Appendix to your Word document and place it at the bottom.

6. Complete the GenAI Appendix.

7. Receive feedback before submitting to Teams.
