What are Quantifiers?

Quantifiers are words or phrases that tell us how much or how many of something there is. They modify nouns and can be used with both countable (things you can count) and uncountable (things you can’t count) nouns.

When to Use Quantifiers

  • To express an amount: “We have enough food for everyone.”

  • To compare quantities: “She has more experience than him.”

  • To describe indefinite amounts: “There are a few apples left.”

  • To indicate totality or lack thereof: “I have no time.” - Use with caution when writing an academic text.

  • To specify a particular number: “I bought three books.”

When NOT to Use Quantifiers

  • When the exact number is crucial: (Use the number itself) “I have five dollars.”

  • In some formal writing: (Can be seen as imprecise) “The study yielded significant results.” Refer to (BH) Boosting and the nuances of hedging.
