Thesis Seminar Module 5: Literature Final Review
Thesis Seminar Recap #5Thesis Seminar Recap #5 - Notes
🎯 Understanding
Instructors will understand that…
-
Coherence and cohesion transform disconnected sections into a unified argument: coherence ensures every paragraph connects logically to the thesis and research questions, while cohesion uses consistent terminology and explicit transitions to guide readers through the argument’s flow.
-
A transitional paragraph bridges two worlds—it synthesizes what the literature reveals about the problem and explicitly sets up the methodological choices that follow, making clear why your study design is the logical response to gaps or tensions in existing research.
-
Alignment verification is the final quality check: when thesis key points, section headings, research questions, and planned data collection all map onto each other, the literature review demonstrates that your study is necessary, focused, and feasible.
🎯 Language Objective
Students will be able to…
-
Revise the full literature review to ensure every paragraph includes explicit connections to the thesis and research questions, using cohesive devices (pronouns, repeated key terms, transitions) to link ideas within and between sections.
-
Compose a transitional paragraph (150-200 words) that synthesizes major findings or gaps from the literature review and explicitly bridges to the method section by explaining why your study’s approach is warranted.
-
Verify complete alignment by creating a visual check: thesis key points = section headings = research questions = planned data collection, and revise any mismatches before final submission.
🎯 Vocabulary
-
Coherence — the logical connection between ideas across the entire literature review, ensuring every paragraph advances the argument and connects to thesis and research questions
-
Cohesion — the linguistic devices that bind sentences and paragraphs together (transitions, consistent terminology, pronouns, repetition of key terms)
-
Transitional paragraph — a bridge paragraph between literature review and method that synthesizes findings/gaps and explains why your methodological approach logically follows
-
Alignment verification — systematically checking that thesis key points, section headings, research questions, and study design all correspond to each other
-
Formal academic style — objective tone, third-person perspective, precise terminology, hedged claims, and adherence to disciplinary conventions (APA)
🎯 Comments
I will be in my office this week, Monday through Thursday, to have scheduled tutoring sessions as normal. But for attendance, you’re required to attend only the whole-group session scheduled for March 1, 2024 at 11:00 am in our assignment classroom (Mod. 2, Room 2).
-
Complete your literature review as follows: Title of your research, thesis statement (no introduction paragraph at this point), 2,000-word literature review divided into two-to-four main sections, and conclude with a Transitional paragraph – not a conclusion paragraph.
-
On Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 8:00 AM, I will download all shared Word documents in Teams and will consider this your first draft to be graded. Once I have graded your first draft of your literature review, I will upload your current grades to ESIIMA..
-
Grades assigned to the first draft of your literature review are provisional and will be assessed (graded) again when you turn in your final draft to me on or before 12:00 PM, May 24, 2024.
-
When completing your first draft, consider the following:
-
Meet the word count.
-
At least one citation in each body paragraph. Each body paragraph should begin with ME and conclude with AL. See MEAL Plan.
-
Each body paragraph should have five-to-eight sentences.
-
Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that aligns with the section heading. Section headings should align with the thesis statement – usually with the key points listed at the end of the thesis statement. The research questions should directly address the section headings and key points listed at the end of the thesis statement.
-
Your literature review should answer your research questions.

-
Begin each body paragraph with the main clause (no transitions).
-
Make sure each evidence sentence (with a parenthetical citation) provides an example, detail, fact, or statistic related to the key terms mentioned in the topic sentence.
-
Make sure each body paragraph begins with ME and concludes with AL.
-
Make sure each body paragraph has five-to-eight sentences and in most cases less than 200 words.
-
Make sure each citation has a reference and each reference has a citation (according to APA).
-
Make sure your text is formatted correctly. See Formatting Word Document according to APA.
